Finish and Color Options

General

Standard finishes and/or color options in the case of glass are listed on the reverse side of the tear sheets (and downloadable below). The natural color and character of wood and vellum will vary and subtly affect the final appearance of the piece. This is a natural occurrence and not considered a defect. Finish samples are provided for general reference only and finished product may reflect the variations of the natural materials. One sample will be provided upon request for any order. If more than one sample is requested, a fee will be charged for each sample thereafter. Custom finishes are available upon request and will require a minimum 10% upcharge. Mattaliano reserves the right to increase the upcharge for more difficult finishes. Custom finishes may also extend the lead time.

Warranty

Mattaliano furniture and accessories are warranted against all defects and workmanship for one year from date of delivery. This warranty does not extend to COM or COL materials, or damage resulting from shipping, accident, alteration, misuse, tampering, negligence, abuse or ordinary wear and tear. Defective products will be replaced within the normal production timeframe that is required to reorder and manufacture the same product. Many wood and metal finishes are applied by hand and may vary in color, character and tone. While Mattaliano will make every effort to match a finish, no guarantee can be made of an exact match. Mattaliano does not guarantee finishes against fading and oxidizing. Variations in color and veining are inherent in stone and wood and considered to be part of the natural beauty. Furniture and lighting are handmade, and therefore is subject to slight variations.

Care Guide

Wood

Mattaliano uses the finest hardwoods available. It is stained, glazed and/or cerused to bring depth and beauty to each finish. All pieces are sealed and protected with a clear coat of conversion varnish or lacquer, but they are still susceptible to wear and the environment. For proper care:

  • The finish is resistant to most household spills. However, spills should be wiped up promptly to avoid potential problems.
  • Do not place hot, moist or plastic objects directly on the wood.
  • Remove dust, fingerprints, smoking residue, etc. with a soft cloth dampened with a cleaning polish or mild detergent solution. Do not use commercial, heavy-duty polishes or waxes, as they can yellow light finishes.
  • Avoid the use of ammonia-based products or silicone oils as they may cause damage if used over a long period of time.
  • Do not place wood and lacquer pieces near heat and air conditioning units or vents to prevent over-drying or exposure to excessive moisture.
  • Avoid extreme humidity changes in your home; extremely dry air can cause wood to crack and lacquer to lift.
  • Stained or soiled wood or lacquer pieces should be professionally cleaned or refinished.

Upholstery

Mattaliano upholstery is handmade with the finest methods and materials available. While all of its products meet fire retardancy regulations, the textiles and skins used to upholstery pieces will have properties dictated by its vendor and its care will be dictated by the vendor and the type of fibers used to fabricate it. But in general, for proper care:

  • Treat upholstery with water- and stain-proofing products recommended by fabric or leather vendor.
  • Vacuum or lightly brush upholstered pieces.
  • Keep upholstered pieces away from direct sunlight.
  • Rotate and flip cushions when vacuuming for even wear.
    • Lightly steam mohair or velvet upholstery to lift its pile, which can be crushed by wear over time, and brush with a de-linting brush to keep it lint-free and maintain its pile.
  • Do not use water or solvent cleaners as they can discolor or stain upholstery.
  • Professionally clean stained or soiled upholstery.

Leather

Leather will have variations in the texture, depth of color and markings such as scars, scratches, wrinkles or blemishes. These should not be considered defects, but natural indications of genuine leather. As natural skins, leather is soft and porous and breathes and move as it wears. For proper care:

  • Keep leather pieces away from liquids and oily substances, which it will absorb.
  • Care for leather by dusting and lightly vacuuming.
  • Keep leathers away from direct sunlight and heating vents.
  • Professionally dry clean all stained or soiled leathers.

Vellum

Vellum is a natural parchment produced from goatskin and has naturally occurring variations in pattern, color and texture that may be noticeable in side by side panels. Like leather, it breathes and moves as it wears. A clear coat of varnish or lacquer is added to protect the vellum during normal use, but it may also darken over time due to exposure to sunlight and heat. For proper care:

  • Wipe vellum gently with a slightly damp cloth, making sure the skin is completely dry when done.
  • Keep it away from direct sunlight and heating vents.
  • Professionally dry clean all stained or soiled vellum.

Metals

Mattaliano’s metalwork is forged or cast and made to last for generations. However, Mattaliano’s pieces are often finely polished or finished with exquisite, painstakingly burnished patinas that will stand the test of time yet require proper care.

For metals in general:

  • Clean with a dry or slightly damp feather duster, cloth or a vacuum brush.
  • Use light soap with lukewarm water if soiled and wipe clean immediately and thoroughly to avoid water spots and ultimately rust.
  • Never use liquid cleaners.
  • If small areas of rust occur, rub with fine steel wool to remove then polish with a clear paste wax and buff well with a soft cloth.
  • Heavily tarnished metals should be professionally cleaned.

For metals with patinas:

  • Clean with a very soft, dry cloth, rubbing gently in the direction of the patina to restore the luster of the finish—particularly to bronze pieces with a wax seal, which dulls over time from the oils of people’s skin.
  • Do not use abrasive cloths or cleaners as they may scratch or damage the finish.

For polished metals:

  • Polish with fine cotton or extra soft cloths that will not abrade the finish.
  • Do not use commercial or heavy-duty polishes or waxes; they may scratch or damage the finish.

Stone

Stone is a natural material and will vary in tone, color and markings. For proper care:

  • Protect stone surfaces, especially tabletops, with Stone Essentials ® Daily Cleaner with Protector, a product recommended by our supplier.
  • Blot spills with a soft cloth immediately to prevent the stain from being absorbed by the stone.
  • Acetone will remove finger prints from the honed black granite tops.

Gold or Silver Leaf Finishes

Gold, silver and other metallic leaf is made of the actual metal that has been beaten into super-thin sheets that average about 0.5 microns thick (a human hair is about 60 micros thick). It is also called foil or gilding, and each metal can yield a range of shades depending on the purity and color of the source material. It can be very delicate and must always be handled carefully. For proper care:

  • Keep out of direct sunlight.
  • Ideally, use gloves when handling for cleaning or moving to keep body oils from staining the finish.
  • Dust with a dry soft cloth or feather duster.
  • Never use cleaning solutions or buff or rub the surface in any way.
  • If a piece needs a more thorough cleaning, or is flaking or cracking, it should be treated by a professional conservator or restorer.
